About this Issue

Venom #6 (2003) marks the opening chapter of the 'Run' story arc, the second of four named arcs in Daniel Way's landmark 18-issue ongoing series — the first sustained Venom monthly since the character's 1990s limited-series era. The issue delivers the first appearances of Ararat Corporation field agents Frankie and Vic, minor characters whose introduction seeds the larger corporate-conspiracy mythology Way was building around the cloned symbiote. Most significantly, this is the issue that sets the symbiote on a direct collision course with Wolverine — establishing the 'ideal host' tension that would drive the 'Run' arc and giving the series its single biggest marquee guest appearance. The symbiote introduced here was later retconned and re-identified as the Mania symbiote, making this arc foundational to a thread that continued into the 2010s.

History

The 2003 Venom series was published under Marvel's short-lived Tsunami imprint, which launched in January 2003 with the stated goal of drawing manga-influenced readers to American superhero comics. Daniel Way wrote all 18 issues; Paco Medina replaced series-opener Francisco Herrera on pencils beginning with issue #6, with Juan Vlasco on inks — a creative team change that coincided precisely with the start of the 'Run' arc. Covers for the 'Run' arc issues were produced by Sam Kieth. The series was later collected in full as the 'Venom by Daniel Way Ultimate Collection' trade paperback (collecting issues #1–18), and subsequently reprinted in a new printing titled 'Venom by Daniel Way: The Complete Collection.'
