Five dangerous women with a flair for the dramatic pose in front of motorcycles as carved jack-o'-lanterns grin from the foreground — it's a Halloween-tinged gathering that sets the tone perfectly for this Vertigo miniseries. A curly-haired woman in cutoff shorts commands the center while her companions, all radiating that signature mix of menace and attitude, flank her against a weathered wooden backdrop, the whole scene rendered with confident linework by cover artist Frank Quitely. Writer Elaine Lee and artist William Simpson bring "Midnight Ride" to life in this 1998 opening chapter of Vamps: Pumpkin Time, and if the cover is any indication, the Vamps are back and fully in their element.
