Lynne is hurt that Derek hasn't responded to her letter and realizes that she loves him. Then she learns that on the day she sent her letter to Derek, Susan had sent a telegram to Derek, advising him that he shouldn't write back at once. Susan had correctly determined that the shock of not receiving a response would make Lynne decide whether she really loved him or not.
