“In Love”

"In Love" is a quietly poignant tale from Valentine #68 (1958), where Ron’s clumsy attempt to catch Audrey’s attention takes a turn when he stages a bicycle accident outside her home—only to be caught in his own deception when she glances out after fetching medicine. As his efforts to win her affection are met with distance, it’s through the gentle intervention of Audrey’s friend that Ron begins to understand the quiet truth behind her coldness. Rendered with subtle emotion by artist Rab Hamilton, this heartfelt story captures the awkward ache of young love and mistaken signals.

Ron stages a bicycle accident outside Audrey's house so he can get to see her, but realizes he is faking it when she peeks in on him after getting some medicine. In the days that follow, she is constantly rebuffing his attempts to be with her. But it is Audrey's friend who finally makes it clear to Ron that Audrey already has a boyfriend, although Audrey thinks she was too harsh and believes her boyfriend is too sure of himself.
