“This Door Swings Both Ways”

In "This Door Swings Both Ways," Ruthy’s long-suffering patience reaches a breaking point when her boss’s repeated jokes about her future marriage finally push her to fabricate her own engagement to escape the teasing. Now trapped in her lie as coworkers pool money for a wedding gift, she’s forced to confront the growing weight of her deception—especially when Stevie urges her to come clean, knowing the truth will one day matter more than she realizes. Illustrated with quiet precision by Oliver Passingham, this poignant 1966 tale captures a moment of personal reckoning with warmth and restraint.

For four years, Ruthy's boss had made the same joke about her going off with some man each time another girl had quit to get married. Finally, it gets to her and she falsely announces that she is leaving at the end of the month to get married. Now everyone is contributing to buy her a wedding present and she feels terrible. Stevie replies that Ruthy needs come out with the truth because the day will come when she will need a reference from her old job.
