“The Very, Very Young”

In "The Very, Very Young," Jill confronts her past when Jim asks why she won’t marry him, leading her to recall her first love, Peter, from school days. Frank Jarvis’s expressive art captures the quiet ache of memory as Jill reflects on Peter’s ambition, his struggles, and the bittersweet moment he asked her to promise to be his always. A sudden, haunting voice from the present interrupts her thoughts—Peter’s, but not the man she once knew—ushering in a quiet revelation that changes everything.

Jim wants to know why Jill won't marry him. Jill thinks back on her first love. In school, Peter had succeeded in everything he tried and she was proud to be his girl. He decided to leave school early to start his own business, but all his attempts failed. Then he decided to go to Canada where his drive and initiative would be appreciated. He kissed her and asked her to tell him she would be his always. As Jill is about to tell this to Jim, she hears a voice that seems to be Peter. His words make it clear he is married, but the girl with him isn't his wife. Jill now feels free to marry Jim.
