Valentine #24 June 1961
In "Where the Boys Are," Roy Newby’s expressive art brings to life a charmingly awkward romance where a missed film, forgotten shoes, and a long hitchhike on a coal lorry turn a simple evening into a whirlwind of missteps. When a lost pair of shoes resurfaces two days later, Evelyn finds herself on the verge of a fresh start—only time will tell if this moment marks a new beginning or another detour. Julian Morote’s cover captures the quiet tension and hope of the moment, perfectly framing the story’s delicate balance between frustration and possibility.

Evelyn had waited ages to see the film, but Rodney hated it. He tries to drag her out to miss the bus queue, but she forgets her shoes in the cinema. They go back in the cinema, but can't find the shoes. Having missing their bus, Rodney has to thumb a lift on a coal lorry. By the time they get home, they hate each other. Two days later a brother of an usherette at the theater returns her shoes. He asks her for a date and Eveylyn thinks her story is going to have a fairy-tale ending.
