Jane's hometown, Cowton Miles, was not a pretty town and she could only be happy in her secret place on the hill, dreaming of being rich and travelling the world. It is there that she encounters Bob in her secret place and she starts telling him about her dreams. One day she gets a letter, offering her a job as a secretary for a man who travels the world. After seeing and doing everything she had ever longed for, she returns home and discovers a house has been built in her secret place. She thinks it is horrible, until she discovers that Bob had it built after she had left.
