“In the Mood”

"In the Mood" delivers a quiet, heartfelt moment in Valentine #19, a 6d comic from December 1964, as Jane’s plans to escape dull Crowbridge for a glamorous Christmas take an unexpected turn. With José González handling both art and inks for the story and the cover, the issue captures a tender, understated shift in perspective—when a missed train might just lead to something more meaningful than the excitement she’d hoped for.

Jane plans to catch the seven o'clock along with the rest of her gang to get out of dull Crowbridge and have an exciting Christmas at a big hotel. But Allan believes Christmas is a family affair and doesn't plan to join them. Jane is asked to lock up, but Allan keeps her late picking out a present for the widow, Mrs. Marks. Jane misses her train, but maybe a family Christmas is what she really wanted after all.
