“Listen to Me”

"Listen to Me" in Valentine #18 (January 1964) captures a quiet, poignant moment in Ann’s life as she leaves the familiar streets of Bruxton for London, chasing a dream of city life while engaged to Gerald. Set against the backdrop of a single year’s separation, her days in the capital unfold in small, telling moments—like the park bench where she meets Alec, sharing quiet time with ducks and growing feelings neither can quite name. As the year ends, choices are made, hearts shift, and a young woman finds herself at a crossroads, caught between duty, longing, and a love that may have never had a chance. Cover by typeset.

Ann and Gerald are engaged, but she has lived all her life in the country town of Bruxton and longs to be at the center of things in London. Gerald agrees to let her live in London for one year while he waits for her. In London, Ann starts meeting Alec on a park bench where they feed the ducks. When Ann's time in London was drawing to a close, Alec tells her he loves her. Using all her will power, she pushes him away only to find out that Gerald has fallen in love with another girl. Ann feels free, but is unable to locate Alec who had left, saying there was nothing to keep him in London.
