“I Love You”

"I Love You" is a touching, quietly poignant story from Valentine #18 (February 1961), where Ann’s world shifts when her playful grandpa, long her caretaker, grows close to Rick after a chance meeting in the park. Drawn with gentle expressiveness by Florenci Clavé, the tale captures the weight of unspoken emotions as Ann’s frustration over years of responsibility finally spills over, leading to a quiet rift that leaves her alone with her regrets. The story’s emotional core lies in the fragile bond between generations and the quiet ache of missing someone you didn’t know how to keep.

Ann's grandpa loves to act like a little boy. He and Ann meet Rick in the park while her grandpa is flying his kite. Rick takes an interest in his hobbies and seems to encourage his behavior. After looking after her grandpa for six years and always having to be the practical one, the strain finally gets to Ann and she bursts out how miserable she is.
