Sam had left six years earlier, but had promised to return to marry Jane. After receiving a letter from Sam that morning, saying he was returning with a wonderful surprise for her, a stranger shows up at her door with a scruffy mongrel dog, thinking it belongs to her. When they discover that no one has reported a missing dog, they decide to adopt it together rather than take it to the dogs' home.
