Michael asks Glenda to marry him, but she has vowed never to marry a man who works in the mines since her father died in a colliery disaster. She goes away and meets David who is studying to be a doctor. David asks her to marry him, but wants her to be sure she is over Michael. They return to her hometown and when they hear the alarm hooter, David feels it is his duty as a doctor to go into the mine to help.
