Valentine #12 January 1963
In "Because of Love," a quiet, isolated life takes a poignant turn when a mysterious traveler named Hugh arrives at Mary’s remote home, drawn by the quiet rhythm of her mother’s memories. Over four years, his seasonal visits become a quiet ritual, each autumn bringing a fleeting connection that deepens with every return—until, as winter looms on the fifth year, a letter arrives with a confession that changes everything. Penciled and inked with delicate precision by Domingo Álvarez, this heartfelt story unfolds with quiet intensity, while Manfred Sommer’s haunting cover captures the bittersweet stillness of a moment suspended in time.

Mary and her mother live in a remote house because it reminds Mary's mother of her late husband. Any visitor near their house was unusual, so when a stranger arrived looking to help out for a few days it was an event. Hugh tells Mary that he stays as long as he likes in a place, then he's off again. Mary wonders what life is like on the other side of the hill. For four years, Hugh returned each autumn. As winter approaches on the fifth year, she receives a letter from him saying that he could fall in love with her, but he mustn't so he will not be coming back.
