Valérian #0
This prequel volume, numbered tome 0 in the series, explores the early adventures of Valérian and Laureline. Titled 'Les mauvais rêves' (The Bad Dreams), it delves into their formative missions and the origins of their partnership, set before the main timeline of the classic science-fiction saga. Published by Dargaud, this collection is part of the 2000s relaunch of the series by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières, though specific creators for this volume are not confirmed here.
"Les Mauvais rêves" kicks off in the year 2720, deep in the heart of Galaxity, where humanity drifts through programmed dreams. When the technocrat Xombul sabotages the dream machines and vanishes into the past—specifically, France in the year 1000—space-time agent Valérian is dispatched to stop him. Trapped in a medieval enchanted forest, Valérian is rescued by the sharp-witted girl Laureline, and together they pursue Xombul across time. Written by Pierre Christin and illustrated with precision by Jean-Claude Mézières—whose inks, lettering, and cover art define the entire visual tone—this is a masterclass in sci-fi storytelling, with a cover by Mézières that captures the story’s dreamlike tension.
