Unknown Soldier #4
The concluding chapter of Garth Ennis and Kilian Plunkett's four-part Vertigo miniseries arrives with a Tim Bradstreet cover that's impossible to look away from — a bandage-wrapped figure kneels in the foreground, head bowed, while a grim-faced man in a weathered coat stands behind him holding a pistol, both figures bathed in a deep crimson wash. Overlaid across them is the inscription "Here Rests in Honored Glory an American Soldier Known but to God," the tomb's words lending the image a weight that's equal parts eulogy and threat. It's a fittingly somber and charged send-off for one of DC's most unsettling explorations of identity and war from 1997.
