“Thou Shalt Not Kill!”

This special double-feature issue of The Unknown Soldier packs two distinct war stories onto one striking cover by Joe Kubert. On the left, the iron-crossed, fur-collared Enemy Ace cuts a formidable figure amid flame and aerial wreckage, while on the right, the bandage-faced Unknown Soldier faces down a rearing, snarling grizzly bear — with armed soldiers pressing in from the snowy hillside behind him — in a scene the cover boldly titles "Bullets and the Beast!" For 50 cents in 1981, DC was delivering a genuinely ambitious package of WWII action, and Kubert's confident linework makes every bit of the danger feel visceral and immediate.
