Vertigo's Unfollow #12 closes out its first year with a cover by Matt Taylor that reimagines Michelangelo's Pietà in a thoroughly modern key — a sunglasses-wearing woman cradles a limp, robotic-limbed figure in her draped arms, the monochrome rendering shot through with the series' bold yellow-and-purple palette. The juxtaposition of Renaissance grief and social-media-age machinery is exactly the kind of provocation this series thrives on. With Williams, Dowling, and Winter bringing "Final Act" to life inside, this December 2016 issue feels like a genuinely earned moment of reckoning.
