“Spontaneous Combustion”

"Spontaneous Combustion" in Underground #nn (1987) delivers a raw, grounded look at street life in a British urban setting, following Chas and Rory as they navigate a world of petty crime and shifting loyalties under the shadow of the Fagin-like Grimes. Written and illustrated by Patrick McEown, Rob Clark, and Craig Taillefer—with inks by McEown, Clark, and Taillefer, and lettering by Shark—this story takes a sharp turn when Chas, after a violent clash with skinheads that ends in tragedy, is pulled from the streets by a compassionate nurse in training, Stephanie. The cover, penciled and inked by McEown, Clark, and Taillefer, captures the tension of a moment just before everything changes.

Friends Chas and Rory, squatters in an English row house area steal for the Fagin-esque "Grimes", coming into conflict with the local skinheads. After the skinhead leader, Chas, kills their friend Toadie in a pub brawl, Chas vows to leave the Underground. Living aimlessly for months, one day Chas is beaten by three skinheads, and rescued by a local nurse in training, Stephanie, and he spends the night in her flat. Scratch explains to the others that he's leaving and Grimes allows him to leave on condition of silence, and he moves in with Stephanie, who says it's too early for talk of love.
