The series was written by Brian Michael Bendis with pencils and colors by Chris Bachalo, inked by Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza, and Al Vey, and edited by Nick Lowe under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. It launched on February 13, 2013 as part of Marvel NOW!, the line-wide initiative Marvel used to reorganize its publishing slate in the wake of Avengers vs. X-Men, and ran concurrently with Bendis's companion title All-New X-Men, which focused on the time-displaced original five X-Men. The issue's framing device — a figure in shadow secretly informing S.H.I.E.L.D. about Cyclops — was a deliberate structural hook that seeded the 'mole on the team' subplot that ran through much of the early arc.
