About this Issue

Uncanny Avengers (2023) #1 marks the return of Marvel's human-mutant Unity Squad for the first time since late 2017, relaunching the concept at its most narratively urgent moment — the catastrophic Fall of X, when Orchis has scattered mutantkind and a false-flag Captain Krakoa is stoking anti-mutant hysteria. The issue serves a dual anniversary purpose, functioning as the anchor title for both the 60th anniversary of the Avengers and the 60th anniversary of the X-Men, making it a symbolic as well as a story milestone. As a five-issue limited series it also revives the longstanding Uncanny Avengers thesis — that a racially integrated team of heroes is the only answer to manufactured fear — at the precise moment the Krakoan era collapses, giving the Unity Squad's message fresh political and narrative weight.

History

The 2023 series grew from two ideas colliding organically: writer Gerry Duggan was already architecting the Fall of X across his concurrent X-Men and Invincible Iron Man runs, while editor Tom Brevoort was seeking a way to honor the simultaneous 60th anniversaries of both the Avengers and the X-Men. Duggan — who had previously written the third volume of Uncanny Avengers from 2015 to 2017 — was officially announced as writer alongside artist Javier Garron during Marvel Unlimited's X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event in March 2023. The series was previewed in the Free Comic Book Day 2023: Avengers/X-Men #1 special (released May 6, 2023), which served as a narrative prelude before the ongoing debuted on August 16, 2023.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published August 16, 2023; written by Gerry Duggan (main story) and Jonathan Hickman (bonus G.O.D.S. teaser page); pencils, inks, and cover by Javier Garron; colors by Morry Hollowell; letters by VC Travis Lanham; edited by Tom Brevoort.
  • The issue is the fourth volume (Vol. 4) of the Uncanny Avengers series, following Vol. 1 (2012–2014, Remender/Cassaday), Vol. 2 (2015, Remender/Acuña), and Vol. 3 (2015–2017, Duggan/Stegman).
  • Debut roster of the 2023 Unity Squad: Captain America (Steve Rogers), Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke (Kwannon), and Monet St. Croix (operating as Penance) — the first time Psylocke/Kwannon and Penance have served as core Uncanny Avengers members.
  • Central mystery of the series — the identity of a murderous new Captain Krakoa leading a reactivated Mutant Liberation Front — is introduced here; the character debuted two months earlier in Free Comic Book Day 2023: Avengers/X-Men #1 and is ultimately revealed across the run to be the Hydra Steve 'Grant' Rogers from the Secret Empire storyline.
  • The issue includes a bonus page by Jonathan Hickman teasing his G.O.D.S. series, making it one of the first places that project received in-comic promotion.
  • Uncanny Avengers #1 was chosen as the launch title for Alex Ross's dual connecting variant cover program celebrating the 60th anniversaries of both the Avengers and the X-Men; Ross's X-Men anniversary cover pays homage to Jim Lee's landmark 1991 X-Men #1 cover.
  • The complete five-issue limited series was collected in the trade paperback Uncanny Avengers: The Resistance (ISBN 9781302952334), which also reprints the Free Comic Book Day 2023: Avengers/X-Men #1 prelude.
  • The series reactivates the Mutant Liberation Front as antagonists — a group that had been inactive since the Krakoan era began — and features villain-side players including Blob, Wildside, and the Fenris twins (Andrea and Andreas von Strucker).
