The series that houses this issue launched in February 2024 as one of the foundational titles of Marvel's relaunched Ultimate Universe (Earth-6160), spearheaded editorially under Jonathan Hickman's framework and spinning directly out of the events of Ultimate Invasion. Writer Bryan Edward Hill, who had previously worked on the Killmonger limited series and the one-shot Black Panther: Unconquered, was brought in to shepherd this new T'Challa alongside series artist Stefano Caselli; Hill has publicly cited Frank Herbert's Dune — with its rival factions, ancient spiritualism, and political maneuvering — as the primary structural model for his Wakanda. By issue #10, regular artist Stefano Caselli had handed interior duties to Carlos Nieto (with Caselli retaining cover credit), while the editorial team of Wil Moss and Michelle Marchese continued overseeing the title under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.
