U.S. paratroopers conduct an airborne assault on Gensan during the Korean War, with the enemy mounting heavy fire and reinforcements as the American forces strike savagely against the communist counter-offensive. The story follows Private Gus Karolsky, an immigrant's son whose brother Jack was killed in a gang fight years earlier; after being drafted in 1949, Karolsky is assigned to the 23rd Battalion at the Yalu River, where he struggles with his inability to fire his weapon in combat until he learns his brother's death was accidental, freeing him to perform his duty as his unit holds the line against Red forces in the frozen mountains of Korea.

Beyond Courage!
6 pp · War

Gus Karolsky has spent his life running from violence—a man-made gun accident in his youth hardened him against weapons, and even military training couldn't shake his dread. But when enemy forces trap his unit during a brutal ambush, the pacifist draftee makes an impossible choice, taking a stand with a machine gun to hold back wave after wave of attackers and save his entire front from collapse. "Beyond Courage!" tells the story of how a man who feared guns became a hero his country would never forget.
