Reaching its 100th issue milestone in 1971, Two-Gun Kid marks the occasion with a cover by Herb Trimpe that puts the Kid in desperate straits — crouched among the rocks with a pistol raised as a thundering cattle stampede bears down behind him and armed rustlers close in from the cliffs above. The speech bubbles tell the whole grim picture: caught between the herd and the outlaws, the Kid grimly acknowledges he may be a dead man watching his last sunset. It's a tense, well-composed western standoff that makes "Stampede!" more than just a story title — it's a promise.
