In 1917, two ships collide in the Atlantic Ocean, near Halifax Harbour. One of the ships is carrying munitions. When news of the imminent danger reaches the people of Halifax, they evacuate. However, telegraph operator Vince Coleman realizes that the Saint John train - carrying 700 people - will be arriving soon. Coleman stays behind long enough to warn the conductor. The train is saved, but Coleman perished in the explosion.
