“Can Love Come Early”

"Can Love Come Early" is a poignant 1951 Charlton gem, drawn entirely by Eleanore Claire, whose expressive artwork brings emotional depth to Eileen’s journey from longing to self-discovery. As a resort waitress torn between dreams of escape and the quiet sincerity of the busboy Rudy, her choices lead her down a path of unexpected revelation—where love and fortune may not be as far apart as she once believed. The story’s quiet power lies in its subtle twist, rendered with sincerity by Claire’s distinctive interior and cover art.

Resort waitress Eileen rejects the love of busboy Rudy, hoping to snare "a wealthy young man...who can take me away from this monotonous life!" She dates wealthy guest Fred, but when he takes her to some sleazy tourist cabins in anticipation of sex, she runs away. Rudy arrives and punches Fred. Eileen says she doesn't care if Rudy is just a busboy, she loves him--then he reveals that his father owns the resort, so she gets both love and money.
