Without a man to run things, Alice struggles to make a go of the small training stable she inherited from her father. She pins her hopes on Silver Flash, a horse that should be worth a lot of money if he wins his races as expected. The owner of nearby Peel Farm returns from rubber-planting in Malaya and takes an interest in helping Alice. Although he initially treats her coldly, Alice can see that he is tortured by a terrible secret. Eventually, she learns that he is married to a woman who deserted him years ago.
