Allison secures a post as children's governess for a Mrs. Belling in South Africa. After a long journey, she arrives only to discover that Mrs. Belling has left her drunkard husband with their children. Mr. Belling tries to become amorous with Alison and when he is found dead the next morning, the servants accuse Alison of killing him. Running away, she is picked up by a widow who offers to let Allison take her place at her dead husband's family estate while she goes off to marry her new lover. Allison is welcomed warmly as the 'widow', but feels guilty living a lie.
