Peg becomes friends with a girl who has lived a sheltered life under a strict father. Peg encourages Vera to slip out and go dancing with her friends. Vera continues to slip out at nights, but Peg feels responsible when Vera reveals that she is pregnant. They leave town together and stay there until the baby arrives. When they return, Peg gets Vera to agree to let her claim the baby is hers to prevent Vera's father from throwing her out. Peg also knows that she can stand up to the town's gossip better than Vera, but this causes problems for her when Jerry returns to town unexpectedly.
