Laura's father and stepmother warn her to stay away from the stranger who has arrived in his boat from Malaya, but she finds herself drawn to him. Soon he tells her his story. Years ago their fathers had been partners in Far East. When Hal's father died, Laura's father had cleared off to England with Hal's father's share, leaving Hal's mother penniless. Now he has arrived to collect his share of the shipyard that Laura's father owns.
