Alison meets Ned when she is visiting Larton with her wealthy father. From their conversation, she can see his ambition, but doesn't tell him who she is. She thinks she has seen the last of Larton, but her father has bought the Luxham's plant and is planning to move there. Ned continues to see Alison, but is one of the last people to learn she is the daughter of the most powerful man in the town. And his job status at Luxham's seems to correspond with the general perception of his relationship to Alison.
