Nineteen years earlier, Rachel had helped hide her husband from the police. Her husband was caught and died in prison. For her role, Rachel was stricken from the medical register. Since then, Rachel had denied herself everything for her daughter, Eve, making a living on the fairgrounds selling health potions as the Ranee Eunasia. Now going by the name of Rachel Keefe, she pretends to have various appointments at hospitals and nursing homes to keep the truth from her daughter. Just as Eve is about to marry into a fine family, Rachel's past threatens to destroy everything.
