Derek is smitten when he sees a young woman, but later discovers that she is married to the older man. Later, the sister of Shirley's husband wants to inherit her brother's wealth and tries to prove that Derek and Shirley do not have an innocent relationship. Shirley feels she owes everything to Amos, who found her penniless and unprotected after her father disappeared. But actually, Amos had run her father out of town on the promise that his valuable land would be administered in her name and that she would be provided for.
