In 1918, a young Father Walsh tries to perform missionary work in Japan, Manchuria and Korea, but the Catholic leaders don't want his help. They feel that because he is an American, he would not be able to get used to the customs of the people. Finally, in Hong Kong, he is offered a missionary position and has to learn the Chinese way of life, their language, writing, customs, food, etc.
