“The Champ at Camp [Chapter Two]”

In "The Champ at Camp [Chapter Two]," Ricky’s day takes a turn when he treats everyone to sodas with his hard-earned cash, only to run into Chuck driving a flashy new convertible. Left alone with the car for a moment, Ricky heads into a newsstand—leaving the keys behind—while Boots and Spider eye the vehicle with mischief in mind. As Ricky returns home, his hopes are dashed by a letter that says he’s been fired. Written by Max Pine and illustrated by Fran Matera, this chapter captures a quiet moment of tension and consequence, with the cover by Fran Matera perfectly framing the story’s small but pivotal scene.
