Transmetropolitan's "Late Edition" banner frames a striking image on this March 1998 Helix/DC release: a shaven-headed figure lies in the foreground, a star tattoo on his temple, his skull connected to a dense tangle of cables and tech, while above him a woman with flowing two-toned hair and a man sporting a cybernetic eye look on through a monitor-like window. Darick Robertson's cover composition is wonderfully unsettling — all tangled wires and cool surveillance energy — perfectly suited to Warren Ellis's story, "Boyfriend Is a Virus." A confident entry in one of the late '90s most distinctly voiced series.
