“Lonely City One of Three”

This late-1999 Vertigo installment of Warren Ellis, Darick Robertson, and Rodney Ramos's sardonic sci-fi series opens the "Lonely City" arc with a cover that sets an unsettling, charged tone. Tony Harris and Ray Snyder's artwork presents Spider Jerusalem — cigarette dangling, iconic tinted goggles firmly in place — looming large on the left, while a glowing, halo-crowned figure surrounded by flames draws outstretched hands from below, and a trio of skull-faced police officers huddle menacingly in the background. It's a striking tableau of authority, devotion, and barely contained chaos that makes this issue hard to put back on the shelf.
