Transformers: The Movie #1

History

With regular Transformers writer Bob Budiansky occupied by the monthly ongoing, Marvel assigned the adaptation to veteran staffer Ralph Macchio, working from Ron Friedman's screenplay — specifically an advanced but not yet final draft. Macchio received three 22-page issues to compress the entire film, and penciller Don Perlin provided the layouts, with Ian Akin and Brian Garvey on inks and Nel Yomtov on colors, under editor Bob Budiansky. Because Marvel was supplied with early animation model sheets that the studios later revised, characters such as Cyclonus appear in designs that diverge noticeably from the finished cartoon. Issue #1 hit stands timed to the film's release in August 1986, while issues #2 and #3 arrived after the film had left theaters; in the UK, all three issues were repackaged as a single 76-page Winter Special with card covers — the largest individual Transformers comic Marvel UK had ever published.
