History

In 1948, Giorgio Mondadori traveled to Burbank and met Walt Disney, who requested that the Italian periodical shift to an all-Disney format. Director Mario Gentilini oversaw the resulting transformation: the venerable Topolino newspaper (which had run 738 issues since 1932) was retired, and a compact 100-page libretto debuted on April 7, 1949, printed on the same press Mondadori used for its Italian edition of Reader's Digest — a pragmatic production decision that gave the book its distinctive 12.5 × 18 cm digest dimensions. The format was conceived partly as a cost-control measure to preserve Mondadori's Disney license, but its unexpected popularity with postwar Italian readers prompted the publisher to commit to it fully. By the time #9 appeared in December 1949, the libretto had already proven its viability, and the editorial team under Gentilini was running one of the most significant Disney publication experiments outside the United States.
