A separate story, "It Started in Jail," depicts homeless boys in 1815 France engaging in gambling and petty crime until police raid their hideout, leading one boy to attempt infiltrating a settlement as a Native trader by blackening his face. The issue combines wartime drama with morality tales about the consequences of crime and deception.
