“Black Hood Battles the Book Worm”

A county fair gets a little more chaotic than planned on this 1944 MLJ cover by Harry Sahle, where a lanky, self-appointed deputy sheriff in red overalls boldly declares nobody's getting robbed on his watch — even as a pickpocket makes his move right behind him, and the costumed Black Hood looms nearby, clearly ready to back up that boast. The "Beware of Pickpockets" sign posted at the fairgrounds makes the whole scene delightfully ironic. It's a charming blend of humor and superhero energy that earns Top-Notch Laugh Comics its billing as "America's Funniest Comics.
