“The Headless Horseman of Cripple Creek”

This May 1941 issue of Top-Notch Comics features a striking cover by Al Camy that puts the Black Hood, the Wizard, and Roy the Super Boy in serious peril — the three heroes converge on the steps of an ancient idol throne, while a bound captive lies at its base and flames lick the bottom of the scene. The towering green deity looming over them, skull-topped staff in hand, makes for a genuinely unsettling centerpiece that captures the pulp-adventure energy Archie's early lineup did so well. At just a dime, this one showcased the full roster of MLJ's golden age roster facing their darkest hour — at least as far as the cover is concerned.
