“The Amazing Walking Fort”

From DC's long-running frontier adventure series, Tomahawk #60 (February 1959) promises high drama on the American frontier with its cover story "Mystery of the Frontier Volcano!" Bob Brown's cover art captures a tense standoff as a chief in full headdress points accusingly at two buckskin-clad frontiersmen — while an enormous, ghostly face looms from the volcanic smoke above, with the speech bubble declaring, "The Great Fire God has spoken! Seize them — they are our enemies!" It's a wonderfully atmospheric setup that blends frontier action with the kind of supernatural mystery that made DC's adventure titles so compelling in 1959.
