Mar 2002 · DC · 2.95 USD; 4.95 CAD
“Live Culture”

In "Live Culture," Tom Strong faces a pivotal rite of passage among the Ozu tribe of Attabar Teru, where tradition demands he slay a fearsome Thunderbird for the tribal feast. Refusing to take a life he doesn’t need, Tom surprises everyone by taming the creature instead, mounting it and riding it triumphantly back to the village—earning the tribe’s respect and naming his new companion Pneuman. Written by Steve Moore and illustrated by Alan Weiss, with colors by Giulia Brusco and letters by Todd Klein, this standout story from Tom Strong's Terrific Tales #2 features a striking cover by Arthur Adams.

As a rite of passage to be accepted as a man into the Ozu tribe on Attabar Teru, Tom must first kill a dangerous Thunderbird to bring to the tribal feast. Being a vegetarian, Tom does not want to kill what he doesn't eat so instead of killing the giant bird, he jumps on its back, tames it, and eventually rides it back into the village to the acclaim of all the tribespeople. He names it Pneuman.
