Tom Mix arrives at the Aboline Valley jailhouse to help the sheriff find a man named Hombre who was shot to death in the hills, and to retrieve a package from the marshal's office. The culprit is a criminal called Blinker with a distinctive beard, wanted for murder, who has a motive to blackmail or swindle others connected to an abandoned mine. Tom tracks Blinker to an Ajax Lumber Camp to apprehend him, but discovers a poisoned apple in a trap—a warning that he has been walking into a deliberate scheme to eliminate him.
