Tom Corbett, Roger Manning, and Astro volunteer for the maiden voyage of the experimental spaceship X-36, only to discover that the vessel is a shoddy imitation built by its designers—Captain Spade and Tarns—as part of a scheme to destroy the ship and eliminate the cadet crew. When the saboteurs set the X-36 on a collision course with the sun and abandon ship, the three cadets must use their wits and technical know-how to survive the deadly heat and escape the sun's gravitational pull.
