“Dream Girl”

In "Dream Girl," twelve-and-a-half-year-old Terry navigates the awkwardness of a party with a new dress and a reluctant date, Chester, whose discomfort mirrors her own indifference to social expectations. Cover by John Stanley, this 1964 Dell issue captures a quiet moment of teenage self-awareness and subtle rebellion, all told through the unfiltered perspective of a girl more interested in a lost hockey puck than her reflection.

Terry, a twelve-and-a-half-year-old girl, prepares for a party in a new dress, but her indifference to her appearance frustrates her mother. Despite her mother's encouragement to admire herself in the mirror, Terry focuses on finding a lost hockey puck in the closet. When her escort, Chester, arrives, he seems unhappy, and their awkward interaction reveals that neither enjoys the other's company. After the party, Terry tells her mother she chose Chester to avoid asking her friend Joe, knowing Chester would feel obligated to attend, highlighting her cleverness and disdain for social norms.
