The main story follows "Black Bill" Desmond, a dangerous bandit who robbed the Wells Fargo Company and was transported via the newly established Pony Express, leading to a confrontation where the Westerner must stop him. A secondary story titled "Sutter's Gold" chronicles the history of gold in California, focusing on John Augustus Sutter, upon whose land gold was discovered, sparking the California Gold Rush of 1848, and explores the fates of those who sought the precious metal. The issue also includes a text story about Davy Crockett, a legendary woodsman and candidate for Congress, who spares a raccoon's life and gains the admiration of the townspeople, ultimately being elected to represent them.
