The War That Time Forgot #7

Issue seven of twelve in DC's 2009 prehistoric survival series finds a determined, dark-haired man in a battered jacket locked in a desperate struggle against a massive giant spider, its hairy legs coiling around him as he strains with both hands to hold back its fanged body — while more of the creatures close in from the edges of the cover. Kevin Nowlan's pencils and inks bring an effectively visceral, ground-level tension to the scene that makes the prehistoric island feel genuinely threatening. With Bruce Jones writing and Al Barrionuevo on interior art, "New Recruit" arrives at the midpoint of this twelve-issue series with plenty of momentum still to burn.
