The Unwritten #37

Vertigo's Eisner-nominated series The Unwritten opens a striking new arc with issue #37, "The Wound — Part 1," from the creative team of Mike Carey and Peter Gross. Cover artist Yuko Shimizu delivers an arrestingly spare image: a figure clutching a brass trumpet tumbles upside-down into a spreading, tentacled pool of deep crimson that coils and blooms across an otherwise stark white background. It's a haunting, elegantly unsettling piece of work that sets a tone of dread and disorientation perfectly suited to a series that has already earned three Eisner Award nominations — Best Cover Artist, Best Single Issue, and Best Writer — in 2012.
